About the Venue
Overview of event, a bit of editorializing, and a touch of history.
On February 13, 2019 an event named "Wildlands Water and Wildlife, For All New Mexicans" plus a lobbyist training Sponsored by the Sierra Club Happened in the New Mexico State Capitol Building located in Santa Fe New Mexico. The event ran approximately 8 AM to 3 PM. There were many tables set up by Environmental and animal rights groups. There were local groups as well as national groups represented. The purpose of these events are to educate the public, and the legislature, as to how fragile our world "Gaia" And how easily it can be damaged permanently. I attended the event, as a Humanitarian, Environment, and a Wildlife advocate. In addition, I participate as a photographer and a lobbyist and training. Many of those photographs are posted to a separate section on this website. For those of you who are not currently involved in environmental and wildlife activism, it is recommend. Many individuals dedicate their whole life to saving the world by saving the environment and wildlife diversity, Even if you cannot write big checks, you can provide some of your time to maintain and enhance the quality of life for everyone. You may not win but at least you tried.
For those that are not aware New Mexico convenes its legislature every year, the sessions alternate between 30-day session for one year and a 60-day session for the next year. We have a citizen legislature they are not paid, they receive Per Diem while the legislature is in session. With in all government bodies there are some tireless hard-working extremely intelligent people. There are also tireless hard-working lobbyists with the best interest of and the overall quality of life for everyone. These lobbyists are dedicated to protecting the general welfare and quality of life for all living things. There are individuals and groups of individuals that can only be described as obstructionist, self-serving greedy individuals. They appear to be stuck in the 1870s national Paradigm of how things are done. Sometimes obsolete arcane traditions need to be updated from the 19th century. More often than not moving ahead can cause heated conflict. This is not necessarily a bad thing; it creates a self-regulating system of checks and balances.
I am on a fixed income, they call it retirement, I call it marginalized poverty. I can donate a little bit of time now and then, and can even afford to make a trip occasionally. If I do, nothing more than stand in a crowd in to make it larger, I have done something. Anyone can write letters to an editor, if everybody just did a little bit there is a good chance we could take back control of our government, which is slipping away at this point, because people do not participate. In ancient Greece, where democracy was founded everyone had to participate in government no one was exempt.
One thing that differs from many states is security is virtually invisible, no one walking around in body armor carrying automatic weapons. The main rotunda is actually a used as a community forum. The center portion of the rotunda the area under the dome is used for press conferences. I could be wrong but it appears to only be one elevator that is available to the public in the building. There also appears to be no maps of the building available to the public, this could be a security issue. You find your way around by trial and error or asking for directions. This year a law was passed prohibiting guns in the gallery overlooking the Senate house and the House of Representatives. You can still carry guns in the main areas of the capitol. To my knowledge no one is ever been shot in the capitol, some kind of strange truce exists. I found invigorating is they have vendors roaming around inside the capital. When I was there on the 13th they had a vendor selling pretty chintzy Valentines arrangements made out of fake flowers and balloons, they had at least one vendor selling food, and a couple of vendors selling artisan jewelry. I am sure they had a permit. Can you imagine someone selling cookies in the rotunda of the Capitol in Washington D.C.?
